Race Day Shoe Drive

For children and adults in impoverished parts of the world, all travel is done on foot, and may require miles of walking every day for basic necessities like food and water. A good pair of comfortable shoes can have a significant physical and psychological impact, but quality shoes are in short supply in many of these countries.

That's why, as a new component of the 2010 Run for Hungry Children, we're asking all of our participants, volunteers, and other supporters at all of our sites to bring their extra / unused walking or running shoes. This is a new addition to the event that will have a daily impact on the people and communities where Bright Hope operates. We'll have a collection bin at the event site, and we'll send the shoes as part of our regular shipments to the countries we serve.

So open up that closet, gather up those shoes you never wear, and bring them on May 15 when you attend the event.

A few guidelines:

  • Comfortable walking or running (athletic) shoes only
  • Shoes can be used, but should be clean and in good shape
  • We need all sizes for men, women and children
  • Please tie your shoes together so we can keep matched pairs

The Mathare Valley Slum, in the heart of the city of Nairobi, holds more than half a million people. Living conditions are horrific, with no basic infrastructure like a sewer system. Disease runs rampant. The government has already declared the food situation a national disaster, and the need here is critical. The most affected are the children, many of whom are orphans. The education of some children at Mathare is made possible by our feeding program which has kept a majority of the children in school and off the streets. This is the only meal most of the children receive all day. Every day 1,300 children from ages 4 to 15 are fed once.
