Mutyaba's Story
Mutyaba is a 16 year old and has attended Katosi Community School for one year. Mutyaba’s parents died, and he now takes care of his three younger siblings who also attend the school. Mutyaba would like to be an artist or an engineer. When he is not studying, he cooks, and works as a builder’s assistant. His siblings also clean and bring water to the house. Mutyaba believes in Jesus and prays to Him every day. Mutyaba’s brother, Kigongo reads the Bible. His favorite verse is from Job 2:20, “In famine he will ransom you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.”
Pedro's Story
Pedro is one of the kids who have lately joined the Recreo program. He is a ten year-old boy and is in fifth grade. Some weeks ago, little Pedro was sitting at the lunch table with all of the other kids at Recreo. For many of the kids, including Pedro, lunch is their favorite part of the program. On this particular day, all of the kids started to eat their food as usual, when we noticed that little Pedro didn’t have any food in his plate. Concerned that something had happened, we decided to approach Pedro. We realized that all his food was in his pockets and that he hadn’t eaten anything! This was very strange since Pedro is a boy with a very good appetite. Pedro confessed that he was keeping the food to take it home. He thought it was unfair that he could eat well but the rest of his family couldn’t. This noble gesture touched deeply in our hearts and it made us realize that his family situation is worst than originally imagined. It also reminded us of the impact of our work on the lives of kids like Pedro.
